Many neighbors knew him by sight -- a large, handsome presence with a confident and inquisitive gaze, who walked the streets of Friendship faithfully twice a day. Thor, the Great Dane/black Lab mix who was the longtime companion of Martha Terry, died in the early hours of September 28. He was 12 years old. Like the Norse god of thunder for whom he was named, Thor had a mighty voice and a noble spirit. On their mile-long walks (stretching to three and four miles some weekends), he and Martha gathered useful information and loose change -- $30 per year! -- as well as countless bags of trash. Thor helped to make Friendship a safer, friendlier place. Thor was a people dog (with a soft spot for men), but tolerated other dogs with reasonable grace, including his housemate Chasca, who died this past summer. Although grizzled and slowed by age in the past year or so, Thor enjoyed life until his last day on earth. His ashes will be put to rest beneath the pine tree on Martha's Coral Street property, along with those of Chasca. --Angele Ellis |
